Lisa Martinez

I was born & raised in Detroit.

You ask who inspired me to teach, and I would say first and foremost, it would be my mother:  she enrolled me in dance classes my entire childhood.  I was a rebellious teenager, who never understood why, but not realizing it, it led me to the disco dancing, ballerina, tap dancing, baton majorette, all of which I would appreciate later in life.  And here I am, an adult in her 50’s.. ready to teach and keep teaching all the days of my life, due to that decision she made for me.  Thank you, mother.  I appreciate all you did for me to get me to where I am.

Many teachers, students, and even YouTube has inspired me !  But the real gratitude goes out to Jennifer Perry (the owner of 359 Yoga Studio in Wyandotte).  She believed so much in me and I will forever be grateful for her. Thank you, Jennifer, you inspire me so much.

Describing my style of yoga, well I would say slow and rhythmic, and I always add a little jazziness to my classes, and they seem to love it.  Just like dance, it’s not a workout, it’s a practice, the more you do it, the better your body becomes at moving from memory.  And my yoga style, well I would call it “Letting Go and Letting In”.  Allowing yourself to let go and breathe, and, to have fun with it.

What brings me to the mat is my hunger for asana and what I feel every time I practice and teach.  What also keeps me coming back are my students and my own practice.  I love what it does for me, and I want to share.. in hopes to make them feel love and peace within, just like Yoga has done for me.  I also want to teach them about the practice and all the benefits it has for them, mentally and physically.  And spiritually !!

I currently teach at 359 Yoga Studio, and I also teach at Wow Workout Warehouse in Trenton.  I love both studios, they let me be creative and make me feel so welcome.

I am newer to YAGD and have not been able to attend every meeting, but I did participate in this past Fall Yoga Day, and everyone was so sweet.  I was able to meet a lot of great teachers and see a few friends who introduced me to YAGD.  I am looking forward to being more involved this year.

My favorite teacher experience:  We had a new student taking our free outside class, which led her to our studio to try our classes. She wrote me a message to Thank me for my class and for the studio, to share with me that it changed her life.  That right there, told me God has a purpose and here is a message for me to keep learning, teaching, and spreading his word.. and teaching was this Gift given to me.

My hobbies:  Yoga of course !

I love camping with my family, traveling, dancing, Zumba, weight training, singing (in my car) walking my dogs, nature, biking and most of all, I Love this Life I am blessed with and the family, friends and gifts I’ve been blessed with.

Namaste,

Lotus Lisa
